Preacher: Léon van Ommen
At Open Icon Baptist Church, we value great preaching — preaching that engages deeply, humbly and honestly with Jesus, the Bible, and the pain and joy of living in the real world. And since going permanently online, we have been able to welcome great preachers from all over the world without having to wait for them to visit our shores. Click here to meet the inspirational preachers depicted in the gallery above, none of whom have preached for us!

Léon van Ommen
Dr Armand Léon van Ommen is a prominent scholar in practical theology, currently serving as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. He is best known for his pioneering work at the intersection of autism and theology, where he focuses on making Christian worship more inclusive and attuned to neurodivergent experiences. His research often addresses the "cult of normalcy" in churches and advocates for a "theology of availability" that welcomes marginalised voices. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Léon lived in Belgium for most of his adult life before moving to Aberdeen in 2016. He earned his PhD from the Evangelische Theologische Faculteit in Leuven, Belgium, in 2015. At the University of Aberdeen, he serve as Co-Director of the Centre for Autism and Theology, and as Senior Lecturer in Practical Theology, teaching and researching in areas including liturgy, worship, disability theology, and the lived reality of religious practices. He is a member of the Liturgy Committee of the Scottish Episcopal Church.
